What is HVUT?

Fleet owners pay the HVUT - Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax annually to the IRS using the Form 2290 for operating heavy vehicles with a registered gross weight of 55000 pounds or more on public highways.

Who must file?

Fleet owners file Form 2290 to pay the HVUT annually to the IRS and the IRS returns the fleet owners with a stamped Schedule 1 copy as a payment proof, and the owners must submit this proof with registration renewal to the state authorities.

What is required?

You need the below information available to complete Form 2290,

  • Business Name and Address.
  • Employer Identification Number (EIN).
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  • Each vehicle’s Taxable gross weight.
  • Routing Number and Account Number for Direct Debit payment.

When to file?

You must file the Form 2290 annually within the tax period starting from July 1st through June 30th.The due date for Annual Form 2290 renewal for new tax period is by August 31st of every year. File the Form 2290 for new vehicles by the last day of the month following the month of the vehicle’s first use.

If the Form 2290 is not filed electronically, mail the completed form to the address of the IRS. Mail the Form 2290-V and your check/money order along with Form 2290, if not paid using EFTPS or credit/debit card.


Motor carriers who fails to file Form 2290 to the IRS by August 31st must pay 4.5% of total tax due determined monthly up to 5 months. Late Form 2290 filers must pay 0.5% of total tax due and 0.54% of additional interest charges per month.
